Breaking barriers for safe water: an all-women mission in Nepal<\/h4>

A few weeks ago, an all-women team embarked on a mission to Nepal to advance the launch of a new 1001fontaines project. Anisha Karn, Nepal Project Manager, Amandine Muret, Chief Development Officer and Eva Leneveu, Program Manager, joined forces to move the initiative forward. Their objectives were clear: secure the buy-in of Madesh provincial government, identify suitable municipalities, and connect with communities to understand their challenges and design the service accordingly.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Water: a daily burden for women and girls<\/h4>\n
\nIn the Madesh Province, access to safe drinking water remains a pressing issue, disproportionately affecting women and girls. In Andheri community of Mirchaiya municipality, we met young girls burdened with fetching water before and after school, twice a day. With no nearby source, their only option is a well\u2014reachable by a 10-minute bike ride. Yet, for several months a year, the well runs completely dry, forcing them to go even farther.\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\u00ab\u00a0We wake up early to fetch water before school.\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong> shared Puja Lama.<\/p>

Our approach focuses on working closely with local municipalities to create sustainable water solutions. In Surunga, Saptari District, we had the privilege of meeting the town\u2019s woman mayor Geeta Chaudhary\u2014one of only four women mayors in Madesh. Water access is one of her key priorities, as currently, only 300 households are connected to piped systems.<\/p>

\u00ab\u00a0<\/strong>Water is not just about survival; it is about dignity.\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong><\/em> said Geeta Chaudhary. \u00ab\u00a0Every woman and girl should have the right to safe water near her home.\u00a0\u00bb<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Women at the heart of change<\/strong><\/h4>

Leading the pilot design is Anisha Karn, whose deep commitment and ability to connect with people\u2014whether in Kathmandu offices or rural communities\u2014make her the ideal person for the role. A passionate advocate for feminine and innovative leadership, Anisha is a volunteer with Toastmasters International<\/a> (a non-profit educational organization that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of clubs), empowering others with her voice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>

With several years of experience as CEO of Smart Paani<\/a> (a social enterprise with significant experience in providing sustainable solutions in water management), she has long stood for change in Nepal\u2019s water sector.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

In 2024, 1001fontaines expanded its efforts to Bangladesh, a country facing severe challenges in access to drinking water, particularly in the southwestern region, where arsenic contamination and increased salinity of water sources endanger the health of rural communities. To address this, 1001fontaines partnered with the local NGO Uttaran to launch a pilot project aimed at jointly building a sustainable model for access to safe drinking water in this
