Cambodia–Thailand Conflict: Safe Drinking Water as a Humanitarian Priority

As tensions between Thailand and Cambodia have escalated, the border conflict has displaced more than 500,000 people in northern Cambodia. In the camps welcoming displaced populations, access to safe drinking water is a vital need.

Emergency Response on the Ground

Supplying safe drinking water to displaced populations

In response to the current humanitarian crisis, Teuk Saat 1001, 1001fontaines’ local partner, has mobilised to provide emergency support. In the provinces of Oddar Meanchey, Preah Vihear, Siem Reap, Banteay Meanchey, and Battambang, teams are distributing safe drinking water free of charge directly within the displacement camps, in coordination with local authorities.

This mobilisation currently enables:

  • the daily distribution of 2,500 refillable 20-liter bottles;
  • the provision of water to around 20,000 families in 30 communes;
  • a presence in nearly 60 displacement camps.

Adapting Programmes in Crisis Situations

Designed to be flexible, the projects of 1001fontaines and its partners can be quickly adapted in humanitarian emergencies. This action in Cambodia demonstrates the team’s capacity to leverage its infrastructure and expertise to maintain access to safe drinking water where needs are most critical, reaching the most vulnerable populations.
